Combat, inscriptions & spells
Learn what your equipped item does before testing it against a threat. A weapon, bow and wand each give the mouse a different job.
Left click strikes with melee equipment; hold right mouse to guard the front. A bow draws and fires with right mouse. Magic requires discovery, a crafted inscription, learning the spell and an equipped Glyph Wand.

Prepare an encounter, including a way out
Check three things before approaching hostile wildlife: your equipped item, stamina and hunger. Attacks use stamina, and the Hungry state hurts recovery. Carrying a weapon is not the same as selecting it, so inspect the active equipment slot.
Our recommended learning approach is to meet one threat in an area with room to move. Keep a visible retreat route. Trying an unfamiliar weapon while also navigating a cliff edge or reorganizing your pack makes it difficult to learn which part went wrong.
The current help distinguishes fleeing deer from wolves and boars that fight back. It also warns of player combat outside towns. Claimed town land protects players from combat, so check the territory you are actually standing on rather than assuming a nearby house establishes protection.
Strike, guard and leave breathing room
Left click performs a melee strike. Holding right mouse with a melee weapon guards against attacks coming from the front. That directional condition matters: face the incoming threat instead of treating guard as protection on every side.
The help advises stepping away while a wolf prepares its lunge. Use that preparation window to create space and recover your position. We do not publish an exact dodge timer or an enemy damage table because those have not been independently verified here.
Low stamina slows swings. Repeated attacks without a pause can therefore feel progressively worse even when the tool has not changed. Watch the resource bar and make room for recovery. Food supports that recovery, and rest is useful between encounters.
A bow needs arrows and a completed draw
Make the bow and its arrows at a workbench, then equip the bow. Hold right mouse to draw and release toward your aim. The published full-draw time is one second; drawing slows movement and releasing too early cancels the shot.
Each shot consumes an arrow. If you are learning the input, check the arrow count before and after a deliberate shot so you can distinguish a cancelled draw from a missed projectile. Avoid changing your aim, moving toward danger and testing draw timing all at once.
The bow’s right-mouse input differs from melee guard. This is why an equipment check belongs at the start of an encounter: muscle memory from a sword does not automatically carry over to a bow.
From a magic flower to your first spell
Treat discovery, crafting, learning and equipping as four separate checks. If a spell will not cast, return to that chain before gathering more ingredients. An item sitting in the pack can be evidence that you completed crafting but skipped reading or equipping.
Spell families have progression: earlier spells must be learned before their stronger relatives. Mana is consumed when casting and refills over time. The Magic menu gives the current cost for each spell, which is a better reference than a fixed value copied from an older version.
- Gather a magic flower. The current help describes this discovery as the step that reveals the Magic menu.
- Make a Glyph Wand at a workbench. Carrying one also makes the blue mana bar visible.
- Build an Inscription Table and craft an inscription using its displayed recipe.
- Open Magic with P and choose Read inscription to learn the spell. Owning the inscription alone is not the final step.
- Equip the wand. Left click casts toward your aim; right click cycles through learned spells.
Improve the equipment you actually use
Forging quality affects melee damage, durability and stamina use. Fine and Masterwork tools offer different bonuses, and assembly choices can also change the final item. Use the crafting guide when deciding whether to improve an existing weapon or produce another basic one.
Sharpening is another preparation option. Inspect a tool in Pack and check its condition before a longer expedition. A small, maintained equipment set is easier to understand than switching between several partly worn items while learning a new enemy.
There is no universal “best build” claimed here. Choose a style you can reliably control, then compare the live stats of items made with different materials and quality. Reliable input and resource management are more useful than an unsupported tier list.
After a defeat
At zero health you die and can choose Respawn. The current official help says inventory is retained and you return to your last rest point. If the camp or campfire for that point no longer exists, you return to the starting area.
Before returning to the same encounter, identify one thing to change: eat, repair, equip a different item, choose more open ground or retreat earlier. This keeps the next attempt focused instead of simply repeating the same sequence.
