Your first day in Asciilands
A handful of resources becomes a workbench. A workbench becomes a better set of tools. Start with that small, repeatable loop before you plan a whole town.
Gather wood, stone and fiber. Craft four planks, place a workbench, then use it to make a stone axe and pickaxe. Eat, set a rest point and choose a Journal goal before wandering farther.

Choose how you want to enter
Open the official game on a desktop or laptop. You can explore as a guest without linking an account. If you want to play across devices, add friends or join a town, use the game’s Discord sign-in. This guide has no separate game login.
Spend a moment in Settings before moving. The game offers Classic and Third Person control presets, and movement bindings can be changed. Use the defaults in our controls guide as a reference, then follow the bindings shown in your own menu.
Our suggested first-session route is below. It is a practical order for learning the systems, not a timed speedrun or a requirement to complete everything at once.
Gather for your next recipe
Wood, stone and fiber are the first three materials to look for. You can collect them without tools. Face a tree or rock and use the gather action; fiber can also be harvested with the nearby interaction key. Start near a recognizable landmark so you can find your work area again.
Open Crafting with C and inspect the basic material recipes. Turn some wood into four planks for the first workbench. Make sticks and rope as well, but check the recipes before converting your entire supply. A pack full of the wrong processed material is less useful than a small mixed stock.
Food can turn up while gathering: trees can provide apples and fiber plants can provide berries. Keep these separate in your mental shopping list. They support recovery while you work; they are not just spare inventory clutter.
Place a workbench, then make tools
Make the tool that solves your immediate bottleneck first. An axe improves tree gathering; a pickaxe improves rock gathering and begins the path toward copper. There is little value in racing toward metal if you are still unsure how to equip a stone tool or return to your bench.
- Open Build with B. Select Workbench and choose a nearby legal placement. Read the preview if the position is blocked.
- Stand near the completed workbench and press F. Select a stone axe or stone pickaxe and check the listed ingredients.
- Start the craft and remain close to the station while it finishes. A workbench job reserves its materials when it begins.
- Open Pack with I, select the finished tool and choose Equip. Crafting a tool does not mean you are already using it.
Keep food and a return point in the loop
Sprinting, gathering and combat consume stamina. When recovery becomes frustrating, check hunger before blaming the tool. The Hungry state slows stamina recovery and prevents healing. Eat from your pack; walking or pausing gives stamina room to recover.
Build a campfire or camp when you can, then sit nearby with Z. Look for the confirmation that your rest point has been set. On death, the game’s current help says you retain inventory and respawn at your rest point; if that structure is gone, you return to the starting location.
For your first outing, choose one nearby destination and return. This gives you a manageable loop to improve: gather, process, equip, eat and explore. Expanding the route gradually makes it easier to notice what a new tool actually changes.
Use the Field Guide and Journal differently
The current Frontier Field Guide is a seven-part introduction: entering the world, harvesting, processing a material, dropping an item, recovering it, placing a structure and reaching another region. Dropping and recovering one inexpensive item is a useful way to learn the pack controls without reorganizing everything you carry.
The Journal, opened with J, gives you goals you can select and pin. Use it after the opening checklist to decide what you want to pursue next. Newly discovered materials can reveal recipes and Journal discoveries, so exploration and crafting feed each other.
Some older catalogue descriptions still mention an 11-step tutorial. This guide follows the current published Field Guide rather than assuming that older count still describes the onboarding you will see.
Your first-session checklist
If the next step will not work
Before a long trip, check your tool’s wear, eat and note your region. A small routine now prevents several unrelated problems from appearing at the same time later.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| A tool recipe is missing | Visit the workbench, discover the required materials and check the recipe filters. |
| The craft will not start | Inspect ingredient quantities and station requirements. Materials need to be in your pack. |
| Movement is suddenly slow | Check your carrying weight and hunger. Store or drop excess supplies. |
| You cannot find your friend | Compare region names in Social, rather than relying only on a familiar-looking landscape. |
